I Love You

Day 14 Prompt: Platonic Love

The breeze gently tousled her gray hair. The air smelled like sweet lavender and damp soil. She took a deep breath, closing her eyes and smiling, as the aroma filled her lungs.

She bent over the dirt, the sun warming her thin shoulders, and slowly scooped out a shallow hole. She dropped a few daffodil seeds into the earth and said, “I love you,” before methodically covering them with the displaced soil.

Looking down at her newly sowed flowers, her mind drifted off to a few years earlier.

She was handing her husband some lilac seeds. He placed them into the small hole he had just dug. He looked over at her with a kind smile and called her over. She knelt down beside him and together they said “I love you” to the seeds.

Smiling at the memory, she unraveled the hose and began spraying her sprawling garden. She shuffled around the paths, watering the flowers, bushes, and other foliage. At the end of the path, she watered the growing tree, her mind swimming back to an earlier day.

Her husband, his walker leaning against the bench, stood frail, but proud. She stood next to him, looking down at the tiny sapling he had just planted. He reached for her hand and, together, they said to the new tree, “I love you.”

She wound up the hose and slowly walked towards the bench at the far end of the garden. She admired the work her and her husband accomplished, whispering “I love you” to the plants as she walked by them. Her husband had always said that the plants can hear her. That they grew faster and stronger when she offered them words of affirmation.

She sat on the bench, sighing as her tired bones set. She looked around the garden triumphantly, excited by the blooming array. She closed her eyes and tilted her head up towards the sky. As her husband’s kind smile filled her mind once more, she whispered, “I love you” to the bright blue sky.
