Day 7 Prompt: Discovery

Rich walked into the station and slowly made his way over to his office after making himself a lukewarm cup of coffee. He was usually the first one in every day and today was no exception; explains the leftover batch of yesterday afternoon’s brew. It was the first Friday of the month, so, when he booted up his computer a short time later, he proceeded with his unceremonious task of opening the “Active Cold Cases” file he had created on his computer.

Cold case units tended to be where they threw seasoned detectives with a healthy track record of solving homicides, and Rich definitely had the accolades. In ‘84, just two years after joining the force, Rich and his more experienced partner, Bob Prince, caught the morbidly named “Mid-Town Maimer.” Woody Decker was responsible for the disappearances of four women (that they knew of) and had completely terrorized the city that summer.

A little over a decade later, in ’96, Rich and Bob caught the now infamous “Doctor Death,” after Dr. Matthew Hunt had racked up over fourteen confirmed murders of geriatric patients. This would be Bob’s last case before retiring but, by that time, Rich had become a household name. Rich went on to solve a number of other cases and eventually took a few years off from the force to travel the country as a consultant for other departments with unsolvable homicides.

Approaching his mid-sixties and not too keen on leaving his wife at home alone for weeks on end anymore, Rich called up the Chief of Police a few years back and asked him for a job. And so, after four decades of being the man with all the answers, Rich was given his greatest challenge of all, the Cold Case Unit. As he clicked through the file he had created on his computer, he recognized some of the details of the cases from his earlier days with the department. One-off cases Bob and he couldn’t solve, or the few cases that slipped through his fingers after Bob’s retirement. He wasn’t Sherlock Holmes, he knew, but he was pretty damn close.

The problem with cold cases is that their solve rate is exponentially lower than fresh cases with undisturbed crime scenes, plentiful evidence, and witnesses that could still recount the events (or witnesses that were at least still alive). Most cases he was working on now had been reduced to a few binders of notes and photos and one or two measly boxes of evidence. It was like building a one-thousand-piece puzzle with less than a hundred pieces. It was hard to not want to give up.

Dealing with cold cases was also extremely emotional. Failing daily was not a pleasant feeling for a man like Rich and, to make matters worse, there were always those few cold cases where a living relative would call, email, or, God forbid, walk into the station asking, begging, for any updates. Rich had had a few experiences where he saw the longing parents of a murder victim pass away without ever getting the answers they desperately needed. To Rich, that was unacceptable and, like it or not, he couldn’t help feeling like it was his fault.

On the first Friday of the month, Rich would go through all his cold case files in descending order by date, starting with cases from the ‘40s and ‘50s, before eventually finishing with the newest cold case addition, which was now a John Doe discovered in an alley six years ago. He would start by going through all his emails and voicemails to see if there were any tips or updated notes from, honestly, anyone. He resolved to follow-up on anything he could get his hands on. Most times, the information he obtained led nowhere, but one time, he had a voicemail from the crime lab that “found a previously undetected thread” on a blanket he asked them to test for the eighth time.

Next, Rich would conduct simple searches of some of the key case details on Google. Internet sleuths were surprisingly helpful in some cases, often pointing out new leads or offering new viewpoints Rich failed to notice. He would also keep his eye out for news articles or blog mentions that could have gone unreported to the police department. He once found an article about a deathbed confession that ended up not panning out, but the quick shot of adrenaline he got was a welcome feeling an otherwise unsuccessful day.

Finally, he would run all DNA profiles they had through CODIS. He never expected anything to change month-to-month, but he had learned through experience that maximum scrutiny of every detail was required if he ever wanted to find justice for the victims and their families. He uploaded the file of DNA records as he always did, clicked run, then walked out of the office to make a new pot of coffee, unable to finish the black slush leftover from the day before.

He walked back into his office, sat down, and wiggled the mouse to wake up his now sleeping computer. When his knees slammed against the top of his desk, his coffee splattered all over the place. He shot forward in his chair and click on the “(1) Match” notification flashing on his screen. He clicked on it and read the details, then, in complete and utter shock, slowly picked up the phone and called the Chief. “Ackerman, sir, you will never believe what I just found.”

Ends up, a young woman took one of those DNA ancestry tests that she had received as a present for her birthday. When the results came back, her DNA closely resembled the DNA found at the scene of a 1972 murder of a twelve-year-old named Julia Franklin. After some detective work, the police were able to deduce that an estranged uncle of the young woman had a perfect match to the DNA that had been sitting in the evidence room for the past four-and-a-half decades.

Three days later, when the squad cars pulled away from the small home on Ashland Street with George Stewart in the back of the car, Rich was driving to Blooming Meadows Retirement Community. He checked in with a nurse and waited patiently in the lobby. A few minutes later, a smartly dressed woman with grey, curly hair and haphazardly applied lipstick slowly moved towards the chair next to Rich. He helped her sit then looked into her kind, sad eyes with a gentle smile. He spoke slowly and clearly so she could hear him and comprehend his words, “Mrs. Franklin, we arrested your daughter’s killer this morning.”
